Ghost Ship analysis

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

The opening 4 minutes of the film display media language to the audience in the form of camara, sound, mise en scene and editing. The usage of camara allows the audience to watch the film at different angles and perspectives to clearly understand what is happening. The use of the birds eye shot at the start and the end of the opening shows a comparison over the 4 minutes. At the beginning the birds eye shot shows the crew dancing with the calm music with this giving the sense of calmness and enjoyment. At the end the birds eye shot shows just the girl by herself with everyone dead around her showing the contrast that in the space of 4 minutes the film has changed drastically. Another use of camara is a shot reverse shot between the women in the red dress and the man in the blue suit. This shot shows the eye contact between the two characters implying that they both know what is going to happen to the crew. This gives the audience something to think about as they both live.

Another use of media language used was sound, one example of sound being used is the positive music that is played across the first couple of minutes. This music gives the impression of a romance film or just showing that the boat is calm and positive, this contrasts throughout the opening scene as the music echoes out across the boat, therefore creating an eery mood. Another use of sound in the opening of Ghost ship is when the wire is first seen. When the wire is first seen the sound of a blade slicing something plays therefore giving the audience the hint that this wire is sharp and will therefore cause damage and death. Another use of sound is when the wire is retracting back. When the wire is retracting the sound of a squeaky door plays as the wire retracts slowly this gives a eery feel to the scene and gives the audience time to realise what happened.

Another use of media language is mise en scene, mise en scene is everything that happens before filming. The choice of what the characters are wearing give a hint to what their personality is like. The women is in a bold red dress therefore standing out from everyone else. The connotation of the colour ed are blood and death which gives the idea that that the women caused to deaths as her dress gave the idea of blood which there was a lot of at the end of the scene. Another use of mise en scene is the bright white lightning at the end as at the start of the scene the lightning was clear but not bright, at the end when all the bodies are falling to the floor the lightning on all of their faces was a lot brighter and whiter this gives the connotation of the people going pale as they have lost a lot of blood

The lats use of media language is editing, editing was used with a slow motion shot of bodies falling to the ground, this was used to give the audience time to realise what had happened and gives the audience time to settle as what happened was very gruesome. Another use of editing was speeding up the wire slicing of the bodies.
